The youth group were invited into a world of wonder as we explored Islamic intellectual and visual culture from the 8th Century to the present day at a special San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) exhibition. In the 13th Century, Zakariyya ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini catalogued the marvels of the universe, as understood at that time, in a single, richly illustrated book, hoping to preserve knowledge in the face of invasion by the Mongol Empire. This remarkable book was the starting point for “Wonders of Creation: Art, Science, and Innovation in the Islamic World”. Led by our friend and SDMA docent Doug McMinimy, we learnt about a culture and worldview that doesn’t sharply delineate between religion and science, between the physical and spiritual worlds, and gained some appreciation for the historic and scientific discoveries and amazing artistic traditions of our Islamic neighbors.
