by | Jul 1, 2024

The 1960’s was a period of much social action and change in our nation.  Here are some items from Mission Hills Council minutes of the early 1960’s.  I would say that our church has evolved!

April 1960

State and local officials are being contacted continually in regard to pornographic literature.  It was suggested that individuals appraise the magazine displays at the markets and express their disapproval or approval to the manager.

May 1960

The San Diego Council of Churches resolved, “I welcome as neighbors kindly and responsible persons and would be willing to have a variety of race, color and creed.”   There was much debate at Mission Hills Church on this issue and it was decided that individuals could choose to support or not support this statement, but that it would not be a “corporate” statement.   Those opposed said “they feared an influx of minority groups into the MH area.

October 1962

“Social Action” committee reports that they have received literature and letters accusing the church of talking “too much about politics and not enough about religion.”
