Affordable Housing
Mission Hills first got involved in providing housing for low-income seniors in the late 1960s when we partnered with HUD to build a 13-story tower one block from the church – Green Manor.
Church members and the pastor continue to serve as the Board of Directors, where, among other things, they ensure the quality of life for residents.
In 2024 the board took a huge step and entered long-term joint ownership of the building with a developer, which will ensure another 55 years of life as Section 8 housing. Every apartment will be renovated starting in 2025. Plus, from that transaction, we received over $50 million with one goal in mind – to build more affordable housing for seniors. Through partnerships, we have a goal of using that money to build 5,000 more units in the next 20 years.
When First Congregational Church merged with Mission Hills, part of their legacy was to build a 13-story tower for low-income seniors, another partnership with HUD for Section 8 housing – First Congregational Memorial Tower near Balboa Park. Again, church members and the pastor continue to serve as the board of directors and will soon go through a similar process in order to build even more housing.
