Reviewing old church files can lead to interesting and fun discoveries. A few lines in the church minutes of 1963  – “Nate Parrish and Jack Henn wish to use the Social Hall to practice volley ball as they prepare for Olympic competition.”

Online research shows that Jack Henn did go on to compete in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics.  He played volleyball at San Diego State and later became the coach, leading them to their only Division I national championship. Nate Parrish also had a reputation as a great volleyball player, though he never made it to the Olympics. He did receive recognition as the first Streaker!  “When he graduated from La Jolla High in 1954, he was asked to stay away from graduation, but Nate came anyway and shocked the crowd when he bicycled around the track naked as a jaybird.” He later became known for the wild parties at his Mission Hills home.
