Building Projects

As building projects pop up all over San Diego, we know just how lengthy these projects can be.  This article from the 1911 Mission Hill Council minutes is a refreshing look at construction projects of old.

“At the midweek service on June 14, 1911, the men of First Congregational Church, who were most interested in a new church in Mission Hills, appointed a Building Committee of 3.  They secured plans from Emmon B. Weaver, a local architect, and adopted them in every detail.  Mr. Weaver was induced to halve his charges and make no supervision of the building.  A lot was secured at the northwest corner of Jackdaw and Getti Streets, among the old olive trees.  The foundations were started June 21st and the cement given the rest of the week to set.  Rev. Thorp called for every man of First Church who was interested to bring a hammer and on Monday morning, the 26th of June, carpenters set about the work.  With the exception of finishing touches, the building was completed that week.”

On July 2, 1911, the new chapel was dedicated.  All less than 3 weeks from the appointment of a building committee!
