Beginning Saturday, November 19, 2011, our Christian
Education Commission will implement the Youth Service Project at
Uptown Faith Community Service Center. This project will
welcome members of our Youth Forum and Confirmation Class, providing
an introduction to helping the homeless and marginalized clients at
Uptown. The youth will meet with an adult supervisor volunteer every
first and third Saturday of the month from approximately 9:00 am
until 11:00 am.
The duties during those two hours will be mostly cleaning. Other
needed tasks, such as folding clothes and bagging food for the
Tuesday distribution will also be included, as needed. Uptown’s
all-volunteer staff has a great need for the help that our youth
will provide. With the youth helping so much to take care of these
tasks, the adult volunteers and staff can spend more time helping
the many clients at Uptown. Please contact Santina Poor in the
church office or Judy Atwater (nearwater1@cox.net) with any
questions.
Mission
Hills UCC has a healthy Youth Forum for teenagers in 7th through
12th grade. Led by our talented Youth Leader, Keith Warrick,
they meet during the 10 a.m. worship service for their time of
fellowship, prayer, and study in the Odgers Youth Lounge.
Youth Forum is responsible for the services on the third Sunday of each month so you will find them serving as liturgist, ushers, musicians, and singers that day. They have monthly social activities as well as opportunities for community service projects and spiritual development.
The group recently participated in a "Staycation" Mission Trip which included visiting Centro Romero in San Ysidro education and outreach regarding border issues, participating in team building exercises, discussing the experiences from Centro Romero, and learning about Liberation Theology from both a biblical and historical perspective In 2010, they traveled to Montana to participate in the UCC’s Western Regional Youth Event where they strengthened their relationships with each other in addition to meeting new friends in other local UCC churches.
